KING TUT:
The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs

By Sakina Khawaja

Visiting the AGO should be an ordeal of a whole day because not only is the structure magnificent but so are the details of each exhibit. This season FW was fortunate enough to view the exclusive Canadian King Tut: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs exhibit and enjoy a far off culture that is familiar to us through Hollywood yet so mystical when seen up close. I must say, having those mega exhibit doors in ancient Egyptian mimicked architecture were breathtaking and an excellent way to set the mood for the world of mystery and luxury to come ahead.

Walking through the exhibit I only wished I could view these artifacts on my own because each piece on display was hovered by at least 10 people trying to absorb its glory and knowledge. That is my own fault- leaving such a magnificent exhibit to only to holiday season days was a choice not by myself but the busy FW schedule. All in all, each piece had a story, a meaning and a reason that was far beyond just Egyptian culture- it was inspiring! The gold necklace, the faces of the pharaohs, the carefully preserved pieces were visionary, immense and filled with glamour- an FW thumbs up for all that saw and it and for those who want to see it please go to www.ago.net/kingtut as it is on till April 18th 2010.

Steichen: In High Fashion

The Conde Nast Years 1923-1937

By Sakina Khawaja

For those who missed the Edward Steichen exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario-you can still view the images online at www.ago.net but to be honest it’s not the same thing! Seeing those images live is just another experience. For fashion lovers- seeing images by Steichen from the 20’s to the 30’s was fun and their soft and feminine feel leaves the viewer feeling quite womanly. The way the images are shot are quite intricate. Even though the scale of the images is not very large their presence is. The soft lighting, and high contrast, the curves on the women versus the straight and flowy silhouettes of the clothing are by any level quite artistic. Every image looks thought out and precise. On the FW scale this exhibit hits top numbers on content and style.

Vanity Fair Portraits

By Medge Beauvoir

Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008 exhibit at the Royal
Ontario Museum was certainly one to see. The exhibit demonstrates
the interaction between
photography and celebrities. Vanity Fair is known to have some of the most striking, ironic, and beautiful celebrity
photos. They showcased about 150 of these photos. The exhibit was divided into two parts: the magazine’s early period between 1913-1936, and the second part from 1983 to the present.
Vanity Fair Portraits was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the modern Vanity Fair, and the 95th
anniversary of its founding. To make this happen, Vanity Fair teamed up with the National Portrait Gallery from London. Madonna, Tom Cruise, Bette Davis, Ernest Hemingway, Louis
Armstrong and Cary Grant are just some of the A-list celebrities photographed.
Some noted photographers such as Edward Steichen and Annie Leibovitz are also featured. For more information,

Dead Sea Scrolls

By Medge Beauvoir

Since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, they have not exactly been displayed for everyone to see. The Dead Sea Scrolls are very fragile and have to be cautiously preserved. Between June 27, 2009 and January 3, 2010, 17 Scrolls along with 2,000 year old artefac3ts from that period were shared with the public at the Royal Ontario Museum. Among the Scrolls were the Book of War Scroll, the Mesianic Apocalyse Scroll and sections of the Genesis (the first book of the Hebrew Bible). This was a fascinating and educational exhibit, well-worth an afternoon visit and FW was lucky enough to go see it! Everything there was absolutely breathtaking. For more information, please visit www.rom.on.ca.
