New Ways to Make 2010 an Eco-Friendly Year

We all make New Year’s resolutions, but how many of us vowed to adopt an
eco-friendly lifestyle in 2010? In this day and age, there is no reason any of us should be neglecting to change a few things about our daily lives that can make a huge difference.
We asked people on the streets of Toronto what they’re doing to implement green living into their lives this year. With these simple tips, you can jump on the hottest new trend:
environmentally friendly living.

Light up your life

Kristina (19, studen):t“Using compact fluorescent light bulbs (or CFL’s) saves money and energy, since they last almost ten times longer than regular bulbs.

Bundle up

Linda (50, teacher): “Rather than turning up your thermostat when the weather gets colder, throw on a sweater. This also gives you a great excuse to shop for new sweaters and cardigans!”

Shop and save

Melissa (20, student): “I’m starting to use reusable fabric grocery bags.”

Drink up

Gabrielle (32, physical therapist):
“I never drink out of plastic water bottles anymore. Stainless steel bottles are reusable,
convenient for work, and they look great!”

Use these tips (and research more – the possibilities are endless!) to reduce your carbon footprint and lead an eco-friendly lifestyle in 2010 and for years to come. Adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle is chic and smart, just like you!

• Switch to fair-trade and organic coffee. You can even bring your own travel mug to be filled up at the coffee shop to avoid using plastic and paper cups that are constantly being disposed of.

• Turn off the lights when you leave a room,
decreasing carbon emissions (and not to
mention, electricity bills!) Unplug your TV, blow dryer, computer, curling iron, etc. when you’re not using them. Even if they are turned off, a plugged in appliance still uses unnecessary energy.

• Get rid of dryer sheets that contain harmful chemicals. Instead, use your favourite essential oil to get the same great smell.

• Shop at eco-friendly boutiques for the chicest way to keep up with trends this year.

• Turn off the water in your shower while shaving your legs. This kills two birds with one stone: it makes it easier to shave, plus it saves energy. You’ll notice the difference in your hydro bills.

• Research make-up brands that offer products made without harmful chemicals.

• Try lip balm made out of shea butter or beeswax instead of petroleum jelly (which is non-renewable).

• Turn off the water when brushing your teeth. The running water is unnecessary and wastes money and energy.

• Swap clothes and accessories with friends, or donate
to the Salvation Army. Never throw them out – your trash could be someone else’s treasure!

• Skip buying skincare products at the drugstore. They are often filled with chemicals that can be harmful to your skin and to the environment. Instead, learn about homemade recipes that are natural and chemical free. For instance, we all know cucumbers get rid of those pesky under-eye circles, dry skin can be taken care of using honey and oils, and avocado keeps skin youthful and moisturized.
